The final determinant of surf fitness is weight. Surfers call it a power to weight ratio asking how much power (strength) is necessary to lift a certain weight body off the board into a stance. Lean is good.

The weather is usually great in Southern California and Oceanside has its share of sunny skies. 

After teaching at the Pier for 12 years, there are few days I can’t teach. There are always foam waves and with wetsuits the water is always tolerable. 

Beginners start on foam waves and if they begin athletically fit, they can usually progress to real waves in 3 or 4 lessons. Learning to ride foam waves and then paddle out for bigger foam waves progresses to riding real waves. 

Depending on your age and ambitions, a lot of people are perfectly happy coming to the beach and just riding foam waves. It is great exercise and it is fun. 

For those who have been sedentary or are not surfing fit at the beginning, they can train to become stronger and more fit. Surfing exercises certain muscles more than others, but it is a full body sport. 

Surfers like to get lean, strong, flexible, and aerobically fit. That is the goal of surf coaching and fitness coaching. You can have them both together in my Surfing and Coaching Packages.
